PARTO

In the installation exhibition “Parto”, I explore and question notions such as desire, sex, motherhood, the relation and social pressure on women’s bodies, or reinvention through art in three vital stages of adulthood, marked by sexual desire, the desire to be a mother and the desire to be free.
“Parto” is configured as an enveloping and immersive red corridor that narrows to the point of asphyxiation, to then cross my own image in large format, in a birthing position and covered in viscous fluid, and cross “to the other side” to confront the viewer in front of the image in the mirror. This journey that the visitor goes through is wrapped by my voiceovers in three tracks, which narrate in a chronological sense that transition from the search and discovery of pleasure with the other to the pressure of the biological counterclock, as well as the normative social environment, on women's bodies. In “Parto”, I construct an allegory about the process of questioning, expelling, and removing weight from myself from the burden of this social ideology around motherhood in order to open the way to other horizons. This piece addresses issues that are increasingly present in the social and feminist debate.
In this sense, “Parto” explores the doubts and fears that many women of my generation have and that are recontextualized in a historical moment of paradigm shift in relation to the notions of maternity and fertility. I highlight related social phenomena, such as the generalized decrease in the capacity for commitment in a context marked by growing individualism and, on the other hand, by increasing precariousness as a consequence of neoliberalism and the lack of reconciliation policies.
